Rooted in Borge Mogensen’s admiration for functional American Shaker design, the backless Mogensen 3172 Bench revisits the 1956 original 3171 Bench with an even purer expression. Stripped back to its essentials, it reflects a philosophy in which thoughtful restraint creates more room for everyday life and connection.
Crafted to order from FSC®-certified solid oak with a generously Kvadrat-upholstered seat, each piece is designed to age beautifully over time. The Mogensen Bench without Back offers greater versatility, moving effortlessly between dining spaces, hallways or relaxed living areas. True to Fredericia’s circular design principles, the bench is purposefully constructed with replaceable and recyclable components - it’s a timeless design made to be lived with, renewed and enjoyed for generations.
Borge Mogensen (1914–1972) started his career as a cabinetmaker in 1934.
In 1936 he went on to study at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts under Professor Kaare Klint before entering the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from where he graduated as an architect in 1942. He became head of design at FDB (the Danish co-op) in 1942 before establishing his own design office in 1950.
