We’re pleased to welcome Jennifer Hagler of A Merry Mishap to Nest.co.uk today.
We interviewed Jennifer recently and quizzed her on inspirations, favourite designers and her love for monochrome interiors, and you can read the full interview below. You can also shop the hand-selected items in her Guest Edit at the bottom of the page.
Hi Jennifer. How did your wonderful blog, A Merry Mishap, come about? Have you always had a passion for interiors and design?
I began writing A Merry Mishap when I was first married but I didn't contribute to it faithfully until after my son was born, about 4 years ago. I've always had an interest in art in general but after having my own home, interior design took on a whole new dimension for me and subsequently became much more important. Thinking about how a space can be used and trying to find its very best version is a continual goal. I'm always thinking 'how can this be better? How can this space work better and look better?' and this drives my passion for interiors and design.
You’re known worldwide for your simple aesthetic and modern monochrome colour palette – what draws you to these colours?
Monochrome palettes work well with my personality. Too much colour, pattern or variation is stressful in my own home. Simplicity is incredibly calming and beautiful to me, and repeating greys, white and black is an easy way to achieve a simple look.
You have a wonderful collection of classic and contemporary furniture in your home – do you have a particular favourite piece, or a favourite designer?
My favourite pieces and designers change frequently, but I do love the Visu Chairs from Muuto. I have two in my office and a lounge version in the living room. The rounded corners soften their shape and are great compliments to some of the more stricter lines in my home.
You live in Idaho in the United States – what do you love most about where you live?
Idaho has a lot to offer. As much as I love city life, the quietness of Idaho has a lot of appeal to families like ours. My husband and I are close to our families who live here as well, and as parents it's hard to think about raising our kids far from our parents and siblings. My family and I would love to live abroad at some point, but for now we love life here in Idaho.
What do you like to do in your free time?
With a busy four year old, free time means finding something fun we can do as a family. Going to the park, playing games or seeing a movie. When I can travel, that's our favourite kind of free time – even if it's just a small road trip. There's nothing like getting away from the usual schedule of things to make you feel refreshed again.
Where do you find inspiration?
I try to draw inspiration from all over: movies, magazines, travel, fashion – all over really.
Finally, what piece of furniture or lighting design is on your wish list for 2014?
I'm looking for a new dining table. With our family growing, I’d love a large, sturdy table which we can gather round for dinner, games and drawing. It's an extension of the kitchen, which is the heart of the home, and such an important common area for the family. The Another Country Dining Table One in black is exactly what we're looking for!
