Spacious, with a stark industrial silhouette, Simon Legald’s Jet Shelf is inspired by the aerodynamic form of modern fighter jets, resulting in a sleek, functional design.
Legald’s clever use of asymmetry sets the shelf apart from other designs, creating an intriguing visual effect with the grooved surface. This surface also prevents objects from sliding off, increasing its functionality. Produced by Normann Copenhagen, the lightweight extruded aluminium design drops seamlessly into a wide variety of different environments.
Simon Legald studies design at the The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and will graduate in the Summer of 2012. His work consists of both small- and large scale products.
“Honesty is what makes a product understandable, and is what describes functionality of the products. If you understand the product, it doesn’t need any explanation. The essence of my design is for it to be bought and used. Therefore it has to satisfy not only the functional aspects, but also the psychological- and aesthetic needs. For me simplicity describes the true identity of objects, and makes them trustworthy. In my designs I try not to add any unnecessary details. I work with simplicity by highlighting the necessities instead of hiding them. It gives the product a simple and honest expression.”
