Unusually, Begum Cana Ozgur chose to design the Haze Rug on the loom, experimenting with different combinations of colours to produce the rug’s striking chromatic effect. Each graphic line is created by the warp and weft, giving the rug a colourful texture.
The hue of the rug appears to shift gradually, bringing to mind the striking atmospheric display of a sunrise or sunset. Wool provides the perfect natural medium for Ozgur’s art piece, rooting the rug in the natural world and deepening our connection with the earth and nature.
Born in Turkey in 1989, designer Begum Cana Ozgur studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the United States, graduating from a master’s program in 2014. Soon after, she opened a studio in the heart of Istanbul, allowing her to harness the rich cultural expression of her homeland; a major motivation in her work.
Ozgur’s work integrates art, design and crafts; utilising a full creative skillset to create gorgeous, expressive pieces. Her modus operandi is to play with common materials, understanding the potential that they possess, in order to develop new contemporary expressions, while promoting traditional craftsmanship and authentic forms.
