Editor’s round-up of 2016
Before ringing in the new year, Nest's MD, Toni, reflects on the rollercoaster year that was 2016, the unexpected turns that life can bring and what Nest.co.uk is really all about...
When I was asked by the team to come up with a ‘round-up’ of 2016 I just didn’t know where to start. Then I realised I had to go right back to the beginning. And that starts this story off with a very big ‘GOSH’!
Who’d have thought I’d be writing this as MD, after starting out as a Saturday Girl over 10 years ago to earn some extra cash to pay off a few debts (we’ve all done it right!). It really is incredible what each and everyone of us is capable of achieving.
The memories and skills I’ve learnt on this journey so far are tremendous. Nest.co.uk is a major part of my life and I enjoy every moment. Even when the days are challenging, they often end up being the ones that I learn and remember the most from.
To be highly commended in this year’s regional Forward Ladies National Women in Business Awards (in the retail sector) was a personal high, a very proud moment and reminder of just how far I’ve come.
It was whilst seeking inspiration for this article that I stumbled across the Do Encouragement Network (via an article on the Guardian website), I clicked around and watched a video that couldn’t have come at a better time. It focused on what it is to give a gift and was brilliantly titled “Do Things The Long Hard Stupid Way” – if you’ve got just under 19 mins spare please check it out for yourself. It certainly rang true with me, but also made me re-look at our values at Nest.co.uk and why we do what we do.
Nest.co.uk was founded by people who love great design and this became our business. We are lucky enough to love what we do, what we sell and it’s a pleasure to share that with you and our customers. If a product is not good enough for our homes, we won’t sell it.
In our search to find new brands and products that meet our standards, we’ve found some beautiful new additions this year.
A personal favourite, and high on my wish list, is the Friends & Founders La Lampe Floor Lamp, it’s elegant, fun and has a timeless personality. Their ethos echoes that of ours.
We believe in style not fashion, so much so that each and every product we sell is authentic, with a timeless quality and to quote our eCommerce Manager “won’t be found in a skip in years to come”. A prime example is a re-visited design classic the Louis Poulsen PH5, recently updated in contemporary shades. I defy anyone not to fall in love forever.
I love that we’re not a big corporate machine. It means that we can provide a friendly, personal service and attention to detail you’ll be hard pressed to experience elsewhere. We are small but perfectly formed.
We work hard collectively and we listen to you. If you need us we’re there, from Live Chat to email to phone we’re never far away.
We believe our customer service should be to the same high standards as the products we sell and the impression should last just as long. So we’ll strive to anticipate problems and know that when they do happen we’ll solve them. In essence we’re on it.
To this end, this year saw us celebrate our online 10th birthday as well as being shortlisted in the prestigious Retail Week Customer Experience Awards, for the Award for Outstanding Digital Experience – what an achievement!
So what does that mean for you our loyal and passionate customers? It means you can trust us to do the right thing. Of course we will keep learning, we will continue to evolve and adapt and we will innovate but we’ll do all of this with you in mind.
Gosh, pass me the mince pies, turn up the music and let’s say cheers to us all having a very Merry Christmas and a New Year that is full of possibilities, challenges and everlasting memories.
With all my love
Toni (T) x
