The Utrecht, from Cassina’s best-selling product range, was originally intended for commercial production - market needs led to chair elements being treated as separate units: the sofa body itself and a pair of oversized armrests attached to the sides. The result of Rietveld’s experimental vision is a robust, structural piece showcasing a balanced geometric composition and right-angled relationships prevalent in the Dutch art style.
A deep, slanted seat invites you to recline and relax comfortably while its base appears light, almost floating above the ground. Visible blanket stitching along its edges highlights the design’s voluminous form and fine Italian craftsmanship is complemented by premium upholstery from the Cassina Collections. Regardless of its placement, the 637 Utrecht Sofa offers a restful spot with a powerful visual presence.

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) was one of the greatest Dutch architects and furniture designers of all time.
Son of a carpenter, Rietveld was trained as a cabinetmaker before embarking on a career in architecture and joining the ’De Stijl’ Movement, which helped define his progressive style. Rietveld’s most significant furniture pieces include the Red and Blue Chair in 1917, and the Zig Zag Chair designed in 1934.
