Structurally speaking it's a truly impressive piece. A mammoth 34 metres of linen webbing goes into the production of each chair, while the base is comprised of form-bent solid birch lamella wood, a technical marvel at the time of production that continues to inform contemporary furniture manufacturing techniques. The Artek 43 Lounge Chair offers low-level reclining, and showcases the stability and flexibility offered by the materials employed in its construction, the strength of which is said to be comparable to that of tubular steel.
As one of the great architects and furniture designers of the 20th century, Finnish designer Alvar Aalto breathed life and warmth into modernism, placing emphasis on "organic" geometry; supple, natural materials; and a respect for human feeling.
Alvar Aalto's collection of mid-century furniture and lighting is produced exclusively by Scandinavian brand Artek including the iconic Artek 60 Stool.
