Inside your homes: Liam Rimmington
With a minimalist aesthetic centred around the use of high-quality materials, Liam Rimmington’s Sheffield home is an ode to beautiful design.
As a photographer and professional photography preset developer, Liam Rimmington has a natural eye for what looks and feels good. So when he invited us to explore his home in the steep suburbs of Sheffield, we were excited to see how one of the city’s creative community was using our designs in his space.
Set back from the street on a quiet mews, photographer Liam Rimmington’s three-storey home feels like a calm escape from the everyday.
Though rented, the space is far from temporary; layered with sculptural furniture, soft textiles and personal touches, it reflects a style that’s minimal yet warm, functional yet full of feeling. With his photographer’s eye guiding everything from colour to light and layout, Liam has created a home that not only looks beautiful but also offers a sense of grounding and inspiration.
We stepped inside to see how he and his partner have made this modern space truly their own.
Could you describe your home for us?
My home is a semi-detached modern timber-built home, comprised of three floors with an open-plan living space, three bedrooms, a utility room and two and a half bathrooms.
With this house being a rental, the approach from the outset was to stamp some of my identity on the space whilst conforming to the restrictions set by the landlord. Luckily, the space offers a nice blank canvas and has some unique touches, such as the exposed concrete flooring downstairs.
You own some beautiful pieces of design. Thinking back to when you first started furnishing your home, do you have a guiding principle when making your decisions on what to buy?
I’ve always been drawn to things that do their functional job well but also offer just as much from an aesthetic standpoint. Any piece that can provide physical and emotional purpose in equal amounts is worth investing in, so that’s the measure I use when considering anything new for my home – can it fulfil its intended purpose, and does it stir me in an emotive way?
What qualities do you look for?
Although my style has evolved slightly over the years, I’ve always been drawn to furniture composed of high-quality materials presented in a simple, clean way – where the raw materials and the form share the spotlight. Take the &Tradition Lato Side Table, for example; the form of that table is clean yet sculptural, with the raw materials of marble and steel working in harmony to give it texture and presence.
Would you say you have a specific interior style you gravitate to?
I gravitate towards a modern minimalistic style without it becoming stark or cold. I enjoy clean lines and open spaces balanced with soft textiles, warm lighting, plants and collections of decorative objects.
Do you have a favourite area in your home?
The downstairs open-plan living room is my favourite space. Although it isn’t large, it works really well for our needs, and I love how each area flows harmoniously to the next without feeling cramped or undefined.
As a photographer, you clearly have a great eye for what looks good. Would you say your profession has influenced the choices you make in styling your home? Whether that’s pairing designs that work well with another, room layout or maximising the natural light in a space.
Yes, I think it does. Colour palettes, visual balance, and textural elements all play an important role in my style decision-making, and much of that comes from my profession as a photographer. Sometimes, though, it can be a hindrance, as I find myself overthinking seemingly small decisions, so I try to also listen to my gut instinct.
How does the home you’ve created and living within it make you feel?
It makes me feel calm and grounded; it’s my retreat from the world. This is a place where I can rest and reset, but also a place where I can feel productive and inspired; it supports both my creative energy and my need for peace.
What’s next for your home? Is there anything else you’re planning or on your design wish list?
I would like to start updating my home office next, as it currently serves me well as a functional space, but I’d like to bring it more in line with my aesthetic taste, too. I have lusted after the Haze Vitrine from Ferm Living for some time, and I would love to get that to display and store my camera gear. I’d also love to get the &Tradition Little Petra Chair as a comfy place to retreat to when I need to step away from the computer.
Is there a design that always looks amazing when it's captured on camera?
I’ve got to say the Atollo table lamp from Oluce has such a beautiful silhouette, and the softness of the light it captures is always a winner in photos - especially the glass model.
Where do you find creative inspiration – either for your work or your home?
I love books for finding inspiration, especially coffee table books that you can pick up and peruse when you have a couple of minutes to spare.
While social media and the web can be great sources of inspiration, they can also be distracting and busy, so stepping away from a screen and spending time flicking through a book can be really refreshing.
Why Nest? We're happy to have you as a returning customer to Nest, having purchased many designs within your home from our collection. What made you decide to buy from us and have the team here ever helped you with your purchases?
I buy from Nest because it’s well-curated and features all the brands I know and love. It’s also nice to support a local business, and I’ve always been blown away by how quickly in-stock items are shipped and delivered (and with the utmost care).
All my purchases have been made online, but when I reached out to support in the past, they’ve always been incredibly helpful and efficient in resolving my query.
