Design Icon: Knoll Saarinen Tulip Dining Table
The elegant and chic result of a five-year design investigation, the Knoll Saarinen Tulip Dining Table is a timeless piece of furniture created in the 50s. Yet it still has as much impact when placed in a room today as it did back then.
Slum of Legs
The creator, Eero Saarinen, vowed to address the “ugly, confusing, unrestful world” he observed underneath chairs and tables. Confused by the so-called “slum of legs” that other tables and chairs created, he sought to design a piece more refined and sophisticated for the purpose of dining. He succeeded.
After five years in the making, these fluid lines and sweeping curves provided the answer to all his problems. With its minimalist structure and simplicity, the Tulip Dining Table made a real impact on the interior design world and is still as popular today as it was then.
The Tulip Dining Table complements just about any aesthetic.
From a formal dining room, to a kitchen space or living area, its simplicity is what makes it such an iconic piece of furniture transcending over half a century’s worth of interior design trends.
The Finnish architect and designer brought many amazing pieces to the design world throughout his career, including the famous Womb Chair and Tulip Chairs. His signature structural sweeping curves are a defining feature of most of his work, with a lot of his inspiration coming from studying sculpture in Paris before studying architecture at Yale.
After meeting Florence Knoll in the 40s, the duo worked together to create some of the most iconic pieces of furniture ever created. The revolutionary Pedestal Collection which the Tulip Dining Table is a part of.
