Design Icon: Louis Poulsen PH 5
As Poul Henningsen's greatest success story, the PH 5 is the lighting gift of choice for the Danes and the world over.
PH is for Poul Henningsen
Poul Henningsen — the renowned Danish designer with the statement glasses, the outspoken man who was sick of seeing dismal homes and the pioneering mastermind who changed lighting design as we know it forever. Poul — the icon who designed the PH 5.
The rise of the PH 5
We won't bore you with elaborative technical details, but there are 3 main features that make the PH 5 truly stand out against the masses — its history, its build and the profound effect it has on the human eye.
In the late 1950s, larger incandescent bulbs were starting to be manufactured, yet lamp shades weren't following in the same suit. Poul recognised this gap in the market for an evolved pendant light design and from his great thinking, the original PH 5 was born. Already at this point, Poul was miles ahead of the competition and it wasn't long before his design started gaining the recognition it deserved.
The anniversary edition of the PH 5 — the PH 50.
With its sleek spun aluminium shade and refined detailing, the PH 5 is evidently of great quality from its build and aesthetic. Take the attractive spacers, for example, which hold the shades precisely in position for the optimum light source. This level of detail is what made Poul an icon of today.
One of the most distinguishable features, however, was the inclusion of small red and blue shades on the inside of the lamp shade, which supplement the colour in the part of the spectrum where the eye is least sensitive. To put it simply, this greatly improves the colour reproduction characteristics of the light source, resulting in a level of light that is close to natural as you can get. Clever stuff.
A colour for every home
A true testament to its appeal, the PH 5 has been refreshed in multiple colour editions throughout the years to suit customer demand. Whether you're more Wasabi Green or Pale Rose, there's a PH 5 (or PH 50) for everyone — please mind the cliché.
The original design classic comes in nothing other than pristine white with rolled aluminium coloured purple struts— a timeless, fresh and neutral choice that's designed to suit all styles of interior.
When the PH 5 turned 50, a new anniversary edition was born — the PH 50. Available in Mint Blue, Wasabi Green, Chilli Red, Olive Black and Coconut White, the PH 50 brings together an eclectic mix of colours that perfectly encapsulate the ever-changing styles across the span of 50 years. Retro meets contemporary.
The latest colours in the mix, the contemporary collection features a sleek combination of shades from khaki green to soft rose and grey. Understated cool.
Will you marry me?
Putting silver cutlery and photo memorabilia aside, the PH 5 is the wedding gift of choice in its home country of Denmark. This is probably down to the fact that it's one of the most renowned Scandinavian trademarks of all time, gracing countless Danish homes since the mid-20th century.
With marriage being all about eternal commitment, we can understand why the PH 5 makes the ideal wedding gift for the Danes. Its style is timeless, its build is flawless and it'll never accrue damage unless you deliberately throw it from the 10th floor of an apartment block (and why would you ever want to do that?!). So alongside any marriage, the PH 5 will stand the test of time with you.
If weddings aren't your thing, then the PH 5 would make an unforgettable birthday or housewarming gift too. We know that we'd be more than happy receiving one ourselves.
Home sweet home
The PH 5 isn't just loved for its beautiful aesthetic — now that would just be shallow. This classic pendant light is found in many Danish homes because it actually makes a difference to your quality of life, preventing the dreaded glare that causes a strain on the eyes and distributing light evenly for a warm, ambient glow.
This is why the PH 5 is often seen suspended above the dining table, casting a balanced level of light that is bright enough for eating, yet gentle enough for a comfortable setting. This was Poul's intention, after all.
It doesn't matter if you've got high ceilings or low wooden beams — the PH 5 isn't fussy. It'll suspend beautifully on its own or in succession of its PH 5 friends in different colours — it's entirely up to you.
The PH 5 is certainly what we'd call a safe choice for the home — not in a sense that it's boring or predictable, but rather in a sense that it can be trusted to look good in pretty much any setting.
