Top Five Designs of 2013
Well, what a year 2013 has been for the design community! Vitra acquired Artek, all the big brands released exciting new products and a collection of new designers came onto our radar in a big way. To mark the end of the year, the team at Nest have put their heads together and have chosen their top five designs of 2013.
While it was a difficult task choosing only five, we feel our choices really reflect the innovative and experimental nature of the designs that emerged this year. We hope you like our selections, we’d love to know what your favourite new releases were!
To start us off are the &Tradition Blown Pendants from British designer Samuel Wilkinson. These twinkly lights took our breath away when we first saw them at the 2013 London Design Festival, and they’re still a firm favourite over three months on. They are available in silver lustre or frosted white sandblast, both of which are equally as stunning.
Next up is the Muuto Oslo Sofa from Anderssen & Voll, which was a stand-out piece at Milan this year. With its curvy silhouette and vibrant colours, we can certainly see this becoming a favourite amongst Muuto fans.
Although they did not release a new product as such, Vitra set the design world alight in Milan this year with their new colour combinations. With the help of Hella Jongerius, Vitra worked on new colourings for many of their items – including the Eames Lounge Chair in all-black, the Eames Storage Units and Standard Chairs (Standard SP), among others. But what stood out the most for us were the new colours of the classic Eames Hang It All. Re-released in green, red and white, the classic Hang It All had a 2013 makeover and looked great for it.
Tom Dixon also had an impressive 2013 as he launched a variety of products. We especially loved the Cell collection, launched in Milan, and can see them becoming as desirable as his popular Copper Shades.
Finally, our star item of 2013 has to be the Fritz Hansen Ro Chair from Jaime Hayon. This gorgeous new lounge Chair is a beautifully curvaceous chair that has been designed with generous proportions for our modern day lifestyles. It comes in a mix of fabrics to add texture and depth, as well as in leather. We just couldn’t take our eyes off it in Milan and are pleased to say a pastel pink Ro has now made it into our own showroom. If you’re in the area, why not pop in and see it in the flesh – we think you’ll love it!
So that’s our round-up from 2013 – what designs caught your eye over the year?
