Fun in the Sun
Last Sunday, our Marketing and Communications manager, Toni, had the pleasure of a day trip to Whitby to judge the RIBA Sandcastle Challenge, just one of the events in the Love Architecture Festival that we are sponsoring.
The challenge took place at 12pm on Sunday 30 June and, luckily for us, the sun was shining when we got there. After a tasty lunch of fish and chips (we were at the seaside after all!), the competition was declared open.
First up were the architect teams who began constructing their elaborate sculptures from midday. After their inspirational – and downright fabulous – designs were built, the general public had their chance to impress us with their skills. There was a wide range of people building away from skilled architects to young children and the whole event had a great community atmosphere.
Here are a couple of our personal favourite designs from the day – both of which showed great creativity!
After a discussion with our fellow judges (Emma England, Sarah Stead and Mayor of Whitby, John Freeman), we crowned Native Architects the winners for their fabulous sandcastle design. We were pleased to offer an Eames House Bird for their efforts, which they say the will take pride of place in their offices – we can’t wait to see the pictures!
All in all it was great to be involved with such a creative event, and we cannot wait to return next year! To see more about the RIBA Love Architecture Festival and to find out what events are happening in your area, head over to their website.
