Through his work, Geertsen experiments with the relationship between sculpture and functionality; creating exceptional pieces that challenge the form and purpose of traditional materials. The smooth, gleaming exterior of the china, creates a translucent light shade that allows light to be projected through the entire surface. The organic pendant shape is complemented by a defining, flower-like top cap in a choice of either gold or silver. The stunningly simple sculpture embodies classic, purposeful Danish design by creating an extreme feeling of cosiness and peace in the heart of the home. The light is perfect for hanging low in a living space near a sofa or armchair, or grouped together over a working or kitchen surface.
Born in Denmark, Michael Geertsen originally trained as a potter in Stensved, before going on to graduate from the Department of Industrial Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design in 1993. Geertsen explores the shape, colour and position of ceramics in a space; experimenting with traditional forms and creating beautiful irregularities with china. His work is represented at the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, The Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen.
