Olive tanned leather from Vitra
Taking steps to become more sustainable in their production methods, Vitra introduces a new eco-friendly olive tanned leather.
One of the newest innovations in the age-old process of leather tanning, Vitra’s ‘Leather Premium F’ is manufactured with a tanning agent extracted from olive tree leaves, which minimises the use of environmentally harmful substances and processes.
This eco-effective tanning method produces leather of superior quality whilst being easy on the skin and environmentally friendly. ‘Premium Leather F’ retains the soft and supple look of a premium quality leather and matches Vitra’s existing leathers for their excellent wear properties and high level of fastness to light and rubbing. A broad spectrum of colours can be achieved through the olive-tanning process too – proving that this an innovation which offers benefits at all stages of the manufacturing process.
The olive leaf extract used for tanning is a pleasantly aromatic, purely vegetable-based syrup made for the leaves of Mediterranean olive trees. A waste product from the olive industry, olive leaves were traditionally burned after harvest. By making use of olive leaf extracts in the tanning process, this not only provides a more environmentally friendly leather but also prevents several tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions as the leaves are no longer burned and creates an extra source of income for local producers too.
The leather for Vitra’s ‘Leather Premium F’ is sourced from Denmark and southern Germany, reducing the transport needs in the production process and further reducing the leather’s carbon footprint.
