Design icon: Northern Dokka Pendant Light
Proving that simplicity is the key to success, the classic Northern Dokka Pendant Light by Birger Dahl has been winning the hearts of the design-conscious for over 60 years.
Light – Bringing people together since time began
The Nordic winters are known for being long, dark and gruelling, providing only a few hours of sunlight in a day. This probably explains why our Nordic friends are so highly skilled in the lighting department, designing timeless lighting products which are subtly clever, beautifully simple and designed to create the right atmosphere for those darker hours. After all, we’re all aware that light can greatly affect our overall wellbeing, dampening our moods in low doses and bringing us comfort and happiness with just the right balance.
A great example of getting this balance just right comes courtesy of the much-loved Dokka Pendant Light, which was brought back into the spotlight by the dynamic Nordic lighting and furniture brand Northern.
The classic that couldn’t say goodbye
Plenty of products get discontinued and then disappear off the face of the earth, but the Dokka Pendant Light was never going to be a one-hit-wonder.
Originally named the Pendel s/10053, this iconic piece of Nordic design heritage was designed by Birger Dahl in 1954 and became one of the best-selling lights in Norway’s history. Unfortunately, the design abruptly disappeared when its original manufacturer Sønnico discontinued their lighting range.
In 2007, Northern Lighting brought this classic Nordic beauty back to life under the name Dokka, revitalising the design in a collection of matte colours that range from warm sandy tones to minimal monochrome hues - offering a rich balance of rich colours and neutral tints.
Make the Dokka feel at home
With its curved contours and sleek, streamlined appearance, the Dokka Pendant Light isn’t one to make a fuss. Despite having such a simple aesthetic, the Dokka still manages to make a statement through the finer details, from the pinched plated-steel shade ring to the smooth matt finish of the shade.
Available in eight complementary colours, the Dokka Pendant can either be hung as a single pendant or in succession. We recommend staggering the lights in a cluster to create a striking centrepiece or hanging a row of three above the dining table.
Northern are all about designing ‘mood-makers’ and the Dokka is no exception. Omitting a soft, warm and ambient light, this pendant is what we describe as a ‘friendly’ light – one that makes you want to pop the kettle on and sit back with a brew.
Birger Dahl – A modernist mastermind
Born in 1916 in the city of Moss, Norway, Birger Dahl quickly established himself as one of Scandinavia’s leading post-war interior architects. With his career reaching its peak in the mid-century era, he also designed modernist classics such as the award-winning Birdy Table Lamp.
They say honesty is always the best policy and this is what made lighting designer and interior architect Birger Dahl’s broad portfolio such a huge source of inspiration for many. Simple, clean and logical, Birger’s lighting designs have always been focused around pure forms, stripped-back aesthetics and harmonious details, drawing influences from his architecture.
