Limited Edition Eames LCM: A walnut chair with an iconic history
Introducing the Vitra Walnut LCM, a reimagining of an iconic chair defined by the pioneering experimentation of Charles and Ray Eames.
Introducing: the new Vitra Walnut LCM (Lounge Chair Metal) – a classic that defies time.
Design is a never-ending process. It is one that adapts and draws from the past, whilst paying attention to contemporary contexts. Design is there to solve problems, and the best ideas are the ones that can be re-imagined for any moment in time. The success of Charles and Ray Eames is inextricably linked to this; their ideas transcended time because they responded to simple, universal problems whilst utilising and perfecting the newest design processes.
The LCM chair was one of these designs; it is a product of the Eames’ tireless experimentation with plywood bending techniques. Their work paved the way, not just for their own designs, but for an array of mouldable, yet strong, objects. This opened up realms of possibility for the furniture industry and beyond.

An instantly recognisable classic, there is no doubt that the LCM is a triumph of their technological breakthroughs. It can bend with the sitter’s movements and support the contours of the human body, whilst remaining impressively durable and strong. It has a previously unfound comfort whilst simultaneously boasting a lightweight frame that can be moved around the home. It is no surprise that Vitra have re-imagined the LCM for a modern audience.
With an exquisite walnut seat and black metal frame, this lounge chair is highly evocative of classic mid-century design.
Indeed, in the spirit of the Eames’ determination to evolve and adapt, Vitra have added a new dimension to the LCM’s history. The appeal of the new walnut finish is a testament to the strength of the original design idea; 70 years on, the comfort, style and pure utility remains as relevant now as it was in 1946.
The use of walnut provides a sleek alternative for those that prefer a more unified, darker finish; it is a classic reborn.
