Cut from the same cloth: Oi Polloi
In modern day context, the term ‘Fashion’ evokes notions of a fast paced, disposable culture. However, not all fashion retailers are cut from the same cloth…
Taking on the industry in a unique way, independent fashion retailer Oi Polloi hold the same values we hold close to home; timeless design. Like us, they’re not a big corporate machine, so when an order from Oi Polloi’s CEO popped up we couldn’t not send a quick ‘hello’.
Since then, we’ve stayed in touch and now know the team quite well. For those of you who haven’t yet had the pleasure, let us introduce Oi Polloi’s CEO; Steve.
What is Oi Polloi?
We’re a men’s clothes shop and website.
When did it start?
We opened our first shop in Manchester nearly 15 years ago and added the London store 2 years ago.
Why did you start it?
We thought there was a gap in the market. All the stores we were fans of seemed to be disappearing. It felt like the right time to start something. We had a simple plan, we'd just put all the elements we liked under one roof, mixing technical outerwear with sports and casual clothing. It all felt logical and natural, like breathing, you don't have to think about it.
What was the first thing you sold?
Initially we bought and sold vintage sportswear and deadstock shoes.
Why are independent businesses important?
Where would big businesses get their ideas from?
What did you eat for breakfast today?
Crumpets & coffee.
What’s the last great film you saw?
Been watching a lot of documentaries (blame NETFLIX) and revisiting films. A good doc would be Daft Punk Unchained and for a good film, Angel Heart.
Have you read any good books lately?
HYSTOPIA by David Means.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Play to your strengths and work with people that are good at what you're not.
Been working on a label...
