Design Tips: Bedroom
For most of us, the bedroom is more than just a place to rest our head. Whether it be a sanctuary of relaxation or a space for personal expression, striking a balance between practicality and aesthetics can sometimes be tricky. Check out our top tips to curate your perfect bedroom...
Without a bed, you haven’t got a bedroom, so it is definitely the most important thing to consider! When thinking about which bed to go for, consider where in the bedroom you like to sleep, the size of your bedroom and those all important storage needs.
Free-standing or Against the Wall?
The go-to choice is to push the bed up against the centre of the main wall, but if you have the luxury of space, you might want to consider a freestanding bed.
Beds with storage can save valuable square-feet, so consider your storage needs before buying. If you’re looking for a more stripped back look, opt for a simple thin frame to create a minimalist airy feel.
If you need storage, go for a bed with a container unit to hide your clutter.
The Perfect Mattress
We spend a third of our time in bed, so getting the right mattress is key. Take a look at our bed buying guide for details on different mattress options for different sleeping habits and loads more information on bed buying.
Sofa Beds & Additional Furniture
The bed is not the only major piece of furniture your bedroom needs. Bedside tables, chairs, desks and sofa beds are among the key items to consider.
Whether it’s for general bits and pieces, an alarm clock, a bedside lamp or that extra bit of storage, everyone needs surface space next to their bed. If you’re struggling for space or only need a little perch, small shelves are a great option.
Equally, a more extensive bedside table is right for many. Opt for a tray table for a simple solution, or consider extra storage by choosing a table with drawers or shelves.
Seating & Sofa Beds
If you have enough space, sofa beds can provide stylish seating and a place for those all important guests. Alternatively, add an extra bit of relaxation to your bedroom with a lounge chair.
A clutter-free bedroom is hard to achieve, but with the right storage, those clothes on the floor might find a less messy home.
It’s easy to create just what you need by personalising storage systems. The String Shelf System has multiple different compartments, shelves and features for you to choose from, and you can have some fun building your own here!
If you want to make your guest feel at home, or you have a seasonal wardrobe that you want to have easy access to, a clothes stand can be an attractively subtle solution.
Smaller storage, such as baskets and small shelves can be helpful to organise the items you use regularly, and can be a great opportunity to add a personal touch to your bedroom. The Woud Input Wall Organiser can help store (and display!) everyday items that cause clutter, providing an interesting feature to your room through its quirky texture.
Lighting can have many functions and is powerful in setting the mood. A light needed for working is very different to a light needed for winding down at night, so it might be worth installing a few different types into your space.
An ambient pendant light is a good place to start, as it fulfils the functional need of replacing natural light when it isn’t available. For reading and working, a desk lamp such as the Anglepoise Original 1227 provides a precise light for specific tasks. Alternatively, you could opt for an adjustable wall light for more flexibility.
Table lamps are perfect for reading in bed, and they save getting out of bed and walking across the room to turn the light off!
It’s important that you invest in furniture that you’ll be happy with for a long time, but accessories can be mixed, matched, moved and changed up as often as you like. Regularly changing your bed linen and blankets and alternating your scatter cushions can help make an impact if your room is in need of a change. They can add a splash of colour and pattern, giving your room a fresh feel.
For relaxation, candles are a good buy, and can be kept as decorative pen or flower pots after the wax has been used.
Achieving the bedroom you want
The key to buying right for your bedroom is considering its day to day function. Balance this with your personal style, and you’ll have a space you can’t wait to come home to.
