Focus on Fredericia
First established in 1911, Fredericia’s sudden growth prevented the bankruptcy of a famous international furniture exhibition in the town of Fredericia.
First established in 1911, Fredericia’s sudden growth prevented the bankruptcy of a famous international furniture exhibition in the town of Fredericia. Despite blooming in popularity before WW2, their subsequent journey was tainted with instability and slow progression. Unable to keep up with the post-war demands for modern design, Andreas Graversen stepped in with Børge Mogensen to reinvent the otherwise dwindling product line.
Andreas Graversen, Børge Mogensen and Thomas Graversen
It was during the following years that Fredericia became renowned for its rustic, robust and distinguishable Scandinavian designs. In 1955, Andreas Graversen’s son Thomas took over the company and continues to produce the best of his father’s and Mogensen’s designs to this day.
Today, the legacy of Fredericia’s most iconic designers still lives on and the brand is more relevant than ever. With a primary goal of producing only boundless designs that aren’t made to please the majority, Fredericia’s designs are some of the most timeless and humbly-loved of the past century.
We take a look at some of their most characteristic and pioneering designs and give you inspiration on how to style them into your home.
Fredericia Stingray Rocking Chair Wood
Designer Thomas Pedersen added a contemporary twist to the classic rocking chair with his 2002 interpretation. The fluid shape of the stingray fish was the clever inspiration behind this prominent chair and allows for a body that moulds into one curvaceous shape. Available in Makassar Brown or Grey, Walnut or Oak White, the masculine wood body is in keeping with the traditional and Scandinavian aesthetic of the brand.
To add a softer and more feminine touch, try draping a pastel-coloured knit throw – such as the Mega Knit from Hay – over the chair.
Despite Børge Mogensen designing the sofa in 1945, this highly sought-after design wasn’t put into production until 1963 thanks to a lack of interest in the post-war period. The ability to lower the sides with characteristic leather straps allows the sofa to be adapted into a classic daybed or chaise longue. Nowadays, its elegant yet simplistic stance makes the 1789 Two Seater Sofa such an incredibly popular product, that it is often copied in various forms.
For a vibrant contrast, try adding an eclectic printed cushion from the likes of Wrong for Hay or Tamasyn Gambell. The vivid geometric pattern of the Wrong for Hay Printed Cushion Full is striking enough without drawing attention away from the sofa itself.
Paying respect to the impeccable craftsmanship of the 1950s, this wonderful dining table designed by SPACE Copenhagen demonstrates simplistic quality at its finest. The thin metal frame adds a modern touch to an otherwise conventional wood table.
To complement the contemporary features, match the table with a set of black Menu Afteroom Chairs with thin, graphical structures.

Fredericia The Hunting Chair
Inspired by a matchbox, Børge Mogensen designed this homely and dynamic hunting chair comprised of wonderfully rustic oak and butt leather. Its sloping back and chunky robust structure gives the chair an air of importance and a timeless appeal for passing through generations for years to come.
In keeping with the warm Scandinavian aesthetic, style your chair with a neutral textured rug. The Hay Peas Rug is available in Light Grey and Dark Grey Melange and is beautifully crafted from 100% pure new wool.
Fredericia J16 Rocking Chair
This classic rocking chair by Hans J. Wegner is like something out of a fairy-tale. Freedom of movement is a particularly prevalent feature of this exceptional design, which tilts and rocks with ease. This chair is ideal for enjoying quiet independent activities such as knitting, reading or listening to music.
For additional comfort or as a styling accessory, add a plush Soft Grid Cushion from Muuto.
