Rabari: Nani Marquina
The Rabari 1 Rug from Nani Marquina recently won the Silver DELTA Award, which is awarded to designers and brands from around the world for outstanding design.
This recent victory is one of many for the 25 years that Nani Marquina has been around.
Nani founded the company in 1987 and it has since continued to grow as a strongly-routed family business, with ambition and enthusiasm never crumbling along the way.
The jury’s assessment for the Silver DELTA Award.
We recently caught up with Nani to find out more about the brand and the work behind the Rabari collection.
Nani Marquina was founded in 1987 and has seen an incredible amount of success since. Is this what you imagined for the brand when you first started out?
Not really! When I first started designing carpets, the manufacturers in Spain could not support me. Therefore, I was ‘forced’ – in a way – to create a business that would make my designs accessible to people. At that time, it was not clear what the company would evolve into, but 27 years later, I can say that I am very proud of it and of where we are now.
Despite the company’s growth, Nani Marquina is still very much a family business. What do you love most about working with your family?
The most important thing for me is that I work with people who have a shared point of view. We share the same future-vision, and it is not short-term, but very much long term. The company is an incredibly important part in our lives and it is shown in every decision we make and every task we complete.
We adore your latest collection, Rabari, which is a collaboration with design duo Nipa Doshi and Johnathan Levien. Can you tell us a bit more about how this collaboration came about? Have you always been fans of their work?
It all begun in 2009, in Milan. I discovered Doshi-Levien’s work during a presentation at Moroso and, after some years investigating designs, colours, textures and techniques, we have been able to present this collection. I love what they do, their sensibility and the way they work. It excites me!
If you had to choose, which would you say was your all-time favourite design from the collection?
What is your favourite colour?
You exhibit your rugs at design fairs all over the world including Milan and New York among others. Do you have a particular favourite show?
The Salone Internationale del Mobile in Milan is my all-time favourite fair.
