The low-voltage Bocci 28d lamp consists of a single sphere wired to a flexible grey crochet memory cable which is designed to be placed on a surface, such as a table, shelf or floor.
The 28 series is formed by creating a conventional glass-blown sphere and allowing it to cool, then using a blowtorch to create a hot patch on the surface. Super-hot glass is then dropped into the heated exterior patch, creating a vacuum inside the original sphere, to which only the very hot, recently introduced glass can respond in a controlled implosion. The result is a slightly distorted sphere with an interior landscape of satellite shapes, including an opaque milk glass diffuser that houses the bulb.
The ‘d’ designation in this variation of the 28 refers to its use as a desktop lamp. The light has a 475cm long flexible memory cable with crochet sleeve that is designed to be composed in a nest-like form to rest the 28 upon.
