The Cassina Argyle dining chair is one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's most celebrated designs and the first of his synonymous high-backed chairs.

The design of the Cassina Argyle dining chair by Charles Rennie Mackintosh is particularly significant because it has little stylistic connection to any of his earlier, more arts and crafts inspired work. Interestingly, the attenuated high back has no real function other than to create a strong visual statement within the tea room itself.

The pierced oval back-rail is decorated with the familiar ‘flying bird’ motif used elsewhere at the Argyle Street Tea Rooms and confirms Mackintosh continued interest in nature as the basis for much of this early work.
