Classic Danish Design from Mater
With a rustic, mid-century appeal, Danish brand Mater offers the perfect collection for the eco-conscious.
As the evenings start to turn cooler and darker and the leaves begin to fall from the trees in the UK, many of us are looking forward to cosy evenings spent snuggled on the sofa over stepping out into the cold. This beautiful collection from Danish brand Mater is definitely well-suited to our current autumnal mood, with warm tones and rich wood finishes making up the collection.
The Mater Sophie Mirror by Jean-Francois Merillou is inspired by an old barrel.
The 'Non-luxury' Brand
Launched in 2006 by Henrik Marstrand, Mater was never conceived to be a 'luxury' brand. Henrik has always aspired for the impeccable quality and sustainable nature of each product to be recognised over its status or worth, which is what makes the beloved Danish brand so humble. This humble nature even extends right through to the brand name, which is actually the Latin word for 'mother'.
"...we must strive for products that survive the test of time by stripping them of 'faddishness' and temporaneity and creating instant classics that the consumer will want to cherish and can maintain — cradle to grave" — Mater
The Mater High Stool in dark-stained beech wood is ideal for both the home and commercial projects.
At One with Nature
Putting small-scale production over industrial methods, Mater is a great supporter of local craft traditions. Using materials such as FSC wood and recycled aluminium, the skilled craftsmen make many of the products entirely by hand, demonstrating the high level of care and attention that is given to the design process. The mango tree, for example, is the primary source of wood for the sophisticated Bowl Table and many of Mater's other designs, as this particular fruit tree is plentiful across the city of Jaipur in India. It's this approach to design that has helped Mater to win a number of awards, including the Wallpaper* magazine award for the Best Debut Design Brand in 2008.
A Timeless Aesthetic
Effortlessly sophisticated and stylish, every design from the Mater collection has a distinctively traditional Scandinavian aesthetic, with organic forms and natural finishes coming together to make timeless, high-quality products.
The Mater Terho Lamp by Maija Puoskari is inspired by the simple shape of an acorn.
A particular favourite of ours from the Mater collection is the delicate Terho Lamp from Finnish designer Maija Puoskari. The soft FSC alder wood shade of the light is designed to be the acorn shell and the mouth-blown white opal glass light source is the acorn nut, making the design a close representation of the original shape. The pendant light can either be hung individually or in succession for a striking yet unassuming centrepiece.
Mater: timeless, durable and perfect for creating a cosy home environment.
