The Wishbone Chair: Paul Smith edition
The Wishbone Chair is one of Hans J. Wegner’s most celebrated designs and it’s easy to see why.
Designed in 1949, the lightweight chair is both timeless and functional and has a gently curved frame for providing that extra special level of support and comfort. The original features a rustic-style paper cord seat and is available with either an oak, walnut or ash frame.
Hans J. Wegner was a revolutionary man in his own right. Through his deep understanding of the need for furniture to be both functional and beautiful, he made mid-century Danish design popular on an international scale. As well as the Wishbone Chair, Hans J. Wegner designed many other classics such as the Shell Chair, Wing Chair and Peter’s Chair.
Hans J. Wegner initially worked as a designer for Arne Jacobsen and Erik Muller’s architectural office, before establishing his own in 1943. Over time, he accumulated a number of established awards such as the International Design Award in New York (1957), the Royal Society of Arts Award (1959) and an Honary Doctorate by The Royal College of Art in London (1997). Even to this day, his love of natural materials and strive for impeccable quality can be felt through each piece of crafted furniture and is still as relevant as ever.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Hans J. Wegner’s birth, the iconic Wishbone Chair for Carl Hansen & Son – amongst selected others – has been revitalised with the addition of Paul Smith’s signature stripes. This limited edition collection provides a vibrant and eclectic alternative to Wegner’s original design, with an instantly recognisable pattern and aesthetic.
Paul Smith is one of Britain’s most iconic fashion designers, with a style that can best be described as ‘classic with a small twist’. His bold Stripes Pattern was first designed in 2006 and has graced everything from handbags and scarfs to classic and contemporary furniture. Our showroom edition features a wonderful industrial red frame with stripes in earthy, rich tones.
