Momentum at the Barbican Gallery
Last weekend, the Nest team took a trip to the Momentum exhibition at the Barbican in London
As a world-class arts organisation, the Barbican is well known for its innovative exhibitions, but Momentum goes far beyond anything they have offered before.
The exhibition, created by London-based art practice United Visual Artists, is an immersive, sensory experience that makes the most of its unique arc-shaped shape surroundings. Set in a darkened room, the exhibition features 12 steel pendulums that activate light and sound as they swing. Each pendulum has been meticulously designed using custom electronics and are tuned to seamlessly resonate as they move within the Curve.
The whole show offers a completely unique experience that is, in equal measures, calming and unnerving. As soon as you enter the installation (via a sweeping black curtain), you are plunged into complete darkness that only subsides when the swinging pendulums come into view. To top this off, the installation room is filled with a discreet mist, which further heightens your senses.
Visitors are only allowed into the installation in small groups so the feeling that you are alone inside the exhibition continually looms large.
Our Web Editor Jess visited the exhibition at the weekend and here's what she had to say:
"Imagine encapsulating darkness, twinged with sounds that are both alien and peaceful at the same time. The darkness heightened everything and I felt utterly allured into this seamless motion of light – focussed entirely on the sequence, the motion, the shadows and the varying shades of black and haze. The curved space opened up reminding me that I wasn’t alone and snippets of human interaction with the light provided another level to the experience. You begin in awe of the light and then reminded you can immerse yourself in the pools of soft lighting and pass again back into the dark."
Momentum is a completely unique exhibition that is meditative, hypnotic and unnerving all at the same time.
If you are in London between 13 February and 1 June we highly recommend a visit.
